Friends Gala Raises $180,000+ for Cancer, Cardiac Funds

The Friends Gala

The Friends Gala has quickly become one of the most popular events in the Cape Girardeau area in just its second year, with this year’s sold-out edition attracting 331 guests in March at the Isle Casino Event Center. Saint Francis Healthcare System Foundation staff would like to thank all of the event’s sponsors and attendees for aiding in the fight against heart disease and cancer.

After raising approximately $111,000 for Saint Francis Healthcare System’s CancerCare and CardiacCare patient funds at last year’s inaugural gala, this year’s goal of $125,000 seemed a reasonable target. Incredibly, we surpassed that goal prior to the event and finished with more than $180,000 in contributions through sponsorships, a live auction, bid board auction and direct monetary donations.

The funds raised at the event go toward the CancerCare Fund, which helps cancer patients in need with nutritional supplements, medicine, transportation and lodging, and the CardiacCare Fund, which provides assistance with cardiac rehabilitation and other necessary services and equipment for patients unable to afford them.

Patient Experiences Tell the Story

Victoria O’Neil’s almost two-year cancer journey provides a glimpse into the value patients experience with the CancerCare Fund:

“My team at the Cancer Institute was nothing short of amazing … Throughout the various treatments, I was traveling to and from Poplar Bluff. This was especially tiring during daily radiation treatments. Thanks to the Saint Francis care team and the CancerCare Fund, I was able to stay in local hotels at no cost. This made a huge difference in my life because it allowed my body, mind and spirit to recuperate from the difficult, often debilitating therapy.”

Likewise, the CardiacCare Fund helped Candace Conrad deal with the financial challenges of being without insurance coverage due to a job change after suffering a heart attack.

“We didn’t think we’d be able to afford rehab. On the day of discharge, my nurse, Lois, indicated there may be money available through the CardiacCare Fund to pay for the (cardiac rehabilitation) visits. Thanks to her and the CardiacCare Fund, I was able to complete 15 visits with your wonderful, talented staff under controlled conditions. Had it not been for the CardiacCare Fund, I would have been left to rehabilitate on my own.”
